IPL 2020: Dhawan hits 50-ball 78 as Delhi post 189 against Hyderabad
In-form Stoinis, promoted up the order for the big match, with Dhawan, rattled Hyderabad in the first power play
Shikhar Dhawan (50-ball 78) scored a brilliant half-century and shared an 86-run partnership with Marcus Stoinis (27-ball 38) to propel Delhi Capitals to 189/3 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League eliminator in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.
An in-form Stoinis, promoted up the order for the big match, with Dhawan, rattled Hyderabad in the first power play. Stoinis, when just on 3, was dropped by Jason Holder, and it proved to be costly. Soon Dhawan joined the party as Delhi raced to 65 runs from the first six overs.
Just when Hyderabad were out of sorts, ace leg-spinner Rashid Khan nailed Stoinis. But Dhawan carried on and got to his 50 from 26 balls. Skipper Shreyas Iyer took a while to get going and perished after a 20-ball 21.
At 126/2, Shimron Hetmyer joined Dhawan and ensured a late surge with lusty blows. Hyderabad did manage to stop the run flow. Seamer Sandeep Sharma got a lucky leg-before decision against Dhawan thereby ending a 52-run stand with Hetmyer (22-ball 42). But after being at 102/1 at the half-way mark, Delhi fell short of 200 as they failed to score a boundary from 18th and 19th overs by Sharma and T Natarajan.
However, 190 is a stiff target to chase on Abu Dhabi pitch. The winner will play Mumbai Indians in the final on Tuesday.
